lulu lovin

One of the things I do every Tuesday morning is look at all of the new items on Lululemon's website. It's a morning ritual. I look forward to it. I cannot buy everything I want... and some weeks I don't see anything I want, shocking, I know! Well this week... I want everything. Or close to everything. Here are some of my faves:

I guess I love purple, pink & black this morning!

Have a great day!

fall fashion envy

I am having a bit of trouble here in Louisiana. These next few days my students are writing midterm exams so I do not need to wear workout clothes to school. I am also done with wearing purple scrubs this week. That means I get to wear real clothes! Right? Wrong. All I want to do is wear cute fall clothes... but 28C does not call for fall layers and sweater. Here are some of my fave looks I am envious of while I try to get dressed these next two days:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6

Clearly I am loving denim, cognac, black & white this fall.
All of my fave fashion blogs provide amazing inspiration... now if only it was cool enough to wear these outfits. You don't need to feel too sorry for me. Soon enough the weather will be "cool" here and the rest of the continent will be covered in snow. Yes, I think fall fashions will have to be pushed back a couple months.

raw zucchini lasagna

Never question Martha Stewart. She knows what she is talking about.  Take this recipe for example.
I love raw recipes because they are quick, simple and delicious! Seriously. Sometimes I don't want to cook. I just want to eat the deliciousness that I plan to put on my plate. This was one of those recipes. I found this recipe on Pinterest but had to make a few adjustments. No farmer's cheese? Just use ricotta. I also could not find basil so I decided to add some pesto to the cheese.

This would make a great appetizer for guests who are leery about raw or vegetarian meals. For me, it's perfect for a weeknight meal. Because when I get home late, who wants to spend the next hour cooking? Not me!

2 zucchini, sliced thin into rounds or strips
2 tomatoes, sliced thin
1c part skim ricotta cheese
1.5T basil pesto
pepper

Mix together ricotta and pesto. Layer: zucchini, cheese, tomato, zucchini, cheese, tomato, zucchini. Arrange on plate and sprinkle with freshly ground pepper.

chocolate chip chipotle salt cookies

Some days you just want a cookie. Luckily, I know lots of people who love cookies so I do not need to eat everything I make. I did not have any butter at room temp... but we live in Louisiana... so I just put it outside and in 30 minutes I was ready to bake! I made some modifications from a recipe I pinned a while back and added some sea salt that I received as a gift from a colleague a couple years ago.

3/4c butter, at room temperature
3/4c brown sugar
1/4c granulated sugar
1 large egg
1T Mexican vanilla
1c whole wheat flour
1c all purpose flour
2t cornstarch
1t baking soda
1/2t salt
3/4c mini chocolate chips
chocolate chipotle sea salt

In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Mix until combined. In a different bowl combine flours, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. Combine wet and dry ingredients and mix until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Stir in chocolate chips. Refrigerate dough for 3 hours. Preheat oven to 350F. Drop balls of dough on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 8-9 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheet then transfer to cooling rack. Share with others and enjoy!

fall wishlist

These are all definitely wants... not needs. Yes, there is a difference. I may not buy any of these but it is always nice to have a wishlist! A list always adds intention to my purchases rather than allowing myself to buy things I do not need.

striped necklace tee: I love that weight of this tee, the added necklace, and I do not own anything with red stripes. Clearly I have three reasons why I need this shirt.
merino pocket sweater: May be too heavy to wear right now as it is still really hot in the south.
red driving moccasins: Red moccasins would fit well in my closet. Yes, they would.
crepe henley tunic: This shirt is a great weight and length. I think it would be very versatile for me.
dot belt: Something fun & neutral to add to my closet.
black pixie pants: I say I am going to buy these every year. Will this be the year?

gallery wall

Today's post is a special one. Sometimes whens someone asks me about something, rather than email them 10 links and pictures, its easier to share here. B's aunt liked my gallery wall. She wants to make one of her own so I thought I would repost the link of my how-to plus a bunch of inspiration photos I have collected.

Here is my how-to post. The most important thing is to plan it out. I used old paper grocery bags as templates. After laying out all of the frames on the floor I taped the paper templates to the wall while measuring for consistent spacing and using a level. The paper templates had a mark for every nail hole which also made it easy to get the frame in exactly the right place.

I wanted my gallery wall to look more uniform so I used black frames with white matting. All of the art we hung is from trips around the world. We seem to be attracted to art in consistent colors so it helped with the uniform look.

Here is a bunch of inspiration photos I have collected. Some are uniform, some are more eclectic. The look you are going for will determine the pieces you choose to group together as well as the types of frames you could use.

I have also found some layouts in case you are feel a little less creative. Sometimes its just easier to have sometime tell you what to do... you just have to hope it fits with your art.

I hope this helps! I wish I was there to help with such a fun project!

banana chocolate chip oatmeal cookies

Who doesn't love cookies? I love a sweet treat but I also know it important to keep nutrition in mind. I found a recipe similar to this online but knew I could make it healthier.

 banana chocolate chip cookies

4T unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2c brown sugar, packed
1/4c granulated sugar
1t Mexican vanilla
1 egg
1 large banana, mashed
1 1/4c whole wheat flour
1t baking soda
1/2t salt
2c gluten free oats
3/4c mini dark chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350. Combine flour, baking soda, salt & oats in a bowl.
Cream together butter and sugars with an electric mixer. Add vanilla and egg. Beat until smooth. Add banana and beat well again.
Slowly add flour mixture to wet ingredients and mix until combined. Add chocolate chips and mix.
Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. Drop heaping spoonfuls onto cookie sheets. Bake for 15 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and cook on wire rack.
Makes 2 dozen cookies.

inspired by

Happy Independence Day!
Personally, I am proud to be Canadian. I mean, I did sport a red & white outfit on Canada Day this year. Though I live in the USA (but am not American), I am still very inspired by the colors red, white & blue. The combo is great for summer. When going through my Pinterest page earlier this week when trying to decide what to wear, I realized I have tons of this combo pinned for inspiration.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

I will probably wear green today. Why? I love green. I also love pink, purple, white & black. Its not about what color you wear one day per year. Its about being accepting of our differences and embracing what makes us unique. If only it was that simple...

Have a great holiday!

29.5.13

gallery wall

It was a productive weekend, I finally completed a big task on my to-do list... the gallery wall. Based on my research this is a multi step task so it took me a while to complete.

We have been collecting art from our trips the past few years. Most of it is from Paris as well as one from Cologne, Germany & Portland, OR. I have been waiting to hang these until we collected enough to make a gallery wall as I really like how they look. I also like that it helps the TV fit better onto an otherwise white wall. I framed everything with white matting and black frames or floating black frames from Joann Fabrics during a recent framing sale.

use old paper grocery bags to make templates for each photo for the wall
lay out all the photos on the floor to make your design
consult a friend for a second opinion
transfer the design to the wall using painter's tape to attach each template
measure everything to be 3" apart & level

make an "x" on the paper where the nail goes, then you can make the hole through the paper
put nails in wall
remove paper and any pencil marks on the wall from measuring

 hang your photos
enjoy your handiwork (can you see me on the sofa next to my HBC blanket?)

The home decor tasks are never done. B does not seem to have that figured it out yet but that is okay. Next task: new bedding and some canvas prints of wedding photography.

inspire me

My degree is very scientific. I spend many moments thinking about methods, kinematics, and writing about research. Although I love scientific research, I love design, inspiration, and creating beautiful things. Here are some of my recent faves from Pinterest, my creative outlet even if it is just for 5 minutes when I need to take a break.

I ordered these Sperry summerlin sandals last week. I cannot wait for them to arrive. I think the leopard print will be great for summer.
I love colorful patterned pillows, especially since we have so many neutrals in our home. These would be a great DIY for summer.
I am obsessed with the idea of pink art in a neutral room. Conveniently, I have a neutral room and am very capable of painting something like this.
It is strawberry season in Louisiana. They are so fresh and such a great price. After the success of last year's satsuma marmalade, strawberry jam may be next!
I recently got a great deal on yellow pants. I am obsessed with the fit and color. I really like this look with the print cardigan.

Have a great Monday!

I share because...

... I care. I was always taught it is nice to share.  Pinterest helps us with meal planning every week. How many people out there have never made a recipe from their recipe board? Not this girl! I will not take the credit for any of these creations (just a link back to the original) but because we loved all of these so much I thought you may too. There is no reason to change or adapt a good thing.

huevos rancheros - because who does not love poached eggs with everything
cauliflower couscous - delicious and disappeared very quickly
cheesy quinoa - we added broccoli for an extra veggie

We have been on a big veggie kick since all of our trips over the semester break. I feel like they fill us up with healthy nutrients and delicious flavors. And my "meat and potatoes" guy has not complained once! Actually he loves all the vegetarian recipes I show him. BTW - are eggs vegetarian?

Now go grab your cheese grater and a head of cauliflower and make some "couscous". I promise it will not disappoint!

Oh, Christmas tree!

I have been begging B to get a Christmas tree for many years. This year I had to choose between a tree and many trips over the holiday season. I opted for vacations!

I did get some inspiration on Pinterest and convinced B to let me buy a couple strings of white lights and a timer at Walmart to make this beauty:

My very own tomato cage Christmas tree!

Its a great addition to our sunroom and shines brightly every night. Thank you, Pinterest, for making me look creative!

Packing according to Martha

Recently I had a chat with my pal Martha about parking for a 2 week trip to Europe. By chatting I mean reading this article and by my friend I mean Martha Stewart. She has been making frequent appearances into my life lately when it comes to cooking, making marmalade, cleaning, and now packing!

Here's an exact except from the link about what Martha told me to pack:

How to Pack a Suitcase for a Five-Day TripIn this suitcase, there is plenty of room for nearly a week's worth of clothing. The key is to keep everything in separate and neat bundles, while making use of the built-in compartments.
1. Sweaters: To maintain the shape of my knitted tops and chunkier sweaters, I line the back of each garment with a few sheets of acid-free tissue paper before folding. These items should never be stored on hangers, either at hotels or at home; doing so can cause the fibers near the shoulders to stretch.
2. Footwear: Shoes are usually the heaviest cargo in a travel bag. To prevent them from crushing delicate clothing, I tuck them around the perimeter of the suitcase. Each pair is kept in an individual drawstring-topped shoe bag. I stuff the toes of my pumps and other dress shoes with acid-free tissue paper; socks go inside sneakers and slides.
3. Assembled Outfits: To streamline both packing and dressing on trips, I plan my outfits ahead of time, complete with shoes and accessories. I put each outfit on a single hanger (unless the top is a sweater) and wrap it in plastic.
4. Accessories: In addition to packing my shoes in pouches, I also place belts in one bag, undergarments in another, and tights and leggings in yet another. This ensures that the suitcase stays organized, even in the rare event it is searched at the airport.

Tangle-Free Chargers: These days, traveling means toting around a lot of electronics. I pack each charger separately in a labeled resealable plastic bag so everything is visible and at my fingertips.

Computer Protection: Laptops have to be taken out of their cases at airport security checkpoints, so I keep mine in a jumbo resealable bag to minimize handling. The power cord goes into a smaller bag.

Light, Easy Reading: I carry my Kindle, which lets me scan an array of books and newspapers, and my cashmere scarf with me on every trip. I also bring my toiletries (in containers that hold less than 3 ounces), a change of clothes, and my contact lens container and solution, just in case I am separated from my luggage.

Uncluttered Carryall: A messenger bag is roomy, can double as a pocketbook, and holds everything I need. I rely on a few coordinating accessories, including a large, sleek walletlike clutch by Perrin, to hold miscellaneous items.

Instant Identifier: One trip to the baggage carousel is proof enough that nearly all suitcases look alike. A bright-green ribbon tied to the handle distinguishes each of my bags from everyone else's.

Security Measure: Many luggage locks are forbidden under security regulations. So I tie the zipper pull tags on my suitcase together with a piece of waxed twine. That way, I can tell if it has been opened.

To Relax or Exercise: Comfortable, breathable clothes are always good to have on a trip. I'll wear them on the plane during a long flight or save them for an impromptu hike or workout.

How to Pack an Ensemble for Traveling: My trips are always extremely busy, so I plan what I'll wear to each event to ensure that I don't take extra clothes. With this one-outfit-per-hanger system, wrinkles are minimized, and I can hang up items as soon as I arrive.
Step 1: Hang the bottom. First, you need a good dual-purpose hanger with metal clips and a secure grip. Attach a pair of jeans or pants or a skirt at the waist.
Step 2: Add the shirt. Slip the top onto the hanger, covering the bottom piece. If possible, keep all the buttons closed so that the shirt and collar will lie flat.
Step 3: Fold and wrap. Place the outfit facedown on a bed or a table. Tuck the pant legs under, creasing at the knees or in thirds. Then fold in the shirt's sleeves, and make a final fold at the bottom to fit inside the suitcase. Slip a clear plastic garment bag (you can use one from a dry cleaner) over the entire bundle, tucking in any excess plastic.

What! I do not think I own that many plastic bags. I mean, I know I am organized but this takes it to a whole new level. I find it kind of inspiring. Is that weird? Come back tomorrow, I will tell you how I am fitting 14 days worth of clothing into one suitcase with only one carry-on planned!

In the meantime, here are some great blog posts I have found on packing:

Planning ahead

I realized the other day we leave for Europe in less than 2 weeks! I have tons of school work, grading, and 2 finals before we leave but I can always get distracted by fashion. I decided to check the upcoming weather forecast in Manchester & Cologne and they are both expecting rain and snow over the next 10 days... I think I am safe to say the 2 weeks we will be there it will also be raining and snowy. I do not want to be touring with wet and cold feet so I knew I needed to make an investment: rain boots!

I did my research, Hunter boots are not in my budget... but I can afford some cheaper similar looking black rain boots ($33 on Amazon + free shipping) along with some Hunter socks (10% cashback through Shop Discover + free shipping).

Its the perfect combo! Now I just need to decide what to wear with my rain boots. Time to get planning! Thanks goodness for Pinterest for inspiration.

Happy Thanksgiving #2!

I am thankful today, and everyday for:
a home to live in
B & our families
all of our friends all over the world
education
health
& happiness

This is our second Thanksgiving this year since we celebrate both Canadian and American holidays in our home. We get a 4.5 day weekend to relax, get ready for our vacations, do work, and eat some great food with friends.
Did you know you have to wear this on your first ever American Thanksgiving:

Kidding! Turkey toques are not really my style.

We have a delicious meal planned as we are having friends over for dinner:
BBQ turkey
mashed potatoes
sweet potato souffle
cranberry orange relish
roasted broccoli
whole wheat buns
pumpkin pie

We are going to have way too much food but it will be great to have leftovers for a few days.
Have a great Thanksgiving weekend!

J.Crew faves of winter

J.Crew came out with their new fall line today. Being my obsessed self, I already have a wish-list and have pinned everything in Pinterest. Here are some of the things on my list:

I am loving all of the greens and blues for winter. Do I need a vest when I live in the south and can only wear it one month of the year? Maybe... hopefully! I might have to wait for that one to go on sale. But I do have a feeling that chambray popover will appear in my closet very soon... and hopefully the chiffon dot top too!

Favorites for fall

My Pinterest obsession truly follows the seasons. Right now pumpkin, sweater & scarves (I know, it is not cold here), and a cozy home.

I saw this scarf last week, it is made by a designer in Montreal. Isn't it beautiful?
We have been obsessed with enchiladas lately. Tonight we made some with turkey leftovers! What a delicious and different way to use up leftover bird.
Friends of our announced they are expecting, due in February. Over Christmas break I will be knitting!
Lately, I have been loving basic stripes and bright colors.
Check out this cast iron skillet shaped like Louisiana! They actually exist for every state. I found this in Martha Stewart Living that came in the mail today.
Pumpkin everything. I made this pumpkin bread on the weekend in loaf and muffin form. It was simple, low-fat and disappeared very quickly.
This decor makes me want to paint all of our walls white. Oh our crazy house.

A "cold front" came through today so I had to wear a sweater.... more due to the humid cold than coldness itself. But then I looked online and it said it is snowing in Canada. Life is busy with school right now... midterms week + a conference next week. Not much else to report from the south!

Missing Joe Fresh

A fellow Canadian friend, who also lives south of the border, mentioned on Facebook that she was excited to go to Joe Fresh on her trip home. This prompted me to check out the website and saw they had their fall fashions posted! There is so much I wish I could go buy. For my non-Canadian readers, did you know Joe Fresh is sold at the grocery store? There are now a few stand alone stores in Canada and NYC but how amazing is it to go for groceries and end up with some new clothes in your cart! One of the many things I miss about Canada...

I have cord jeans from last year, they are amazing. I highly recommend these, especially for the price.
Why do I want a puffa vest? I live in Louisiana where is might frost once per year?!?
Canadian family and friends... take note! What a great Christmas gift... something I no longer have access to. While I mention it, I also really like the houndstooth dress and coloured denim!

22.8.12

Lovin Lulu

I love Lululemon clothing. Its not a secret. Is it the Canadian in me? Or do I just love a great quality product. Since I am teaching Zumba 9 hours a week... starting yesterday... I am going to be living in my workout clothing. Luckily its cute! Here are my three new faves:

Now we just need more than a showroom in Baton Rouge so I do not need to order these goodies online... luckily Lulu has free shipping!

Instpired by neutrals

Lately, I have been loving neutrals... all over my life. Clothing, home decor, food, crafts. Its soothing and addicting. Maybe its because fall is coming. Wait, I live in Louisiana... fall is still months away and the hottest months are about to arrive. Lucky for me, I need to take a sweater everywhere because southerners love their air conditioning.
